Lithium batteries on 12, 24 and 36 volt

Lithium batteries are thé alternative to lead batteries. They weigh up to 75% less than a comparable lead-acid battery and their lifespan is 3 times longer. You never have to worry about discharging the battery too deeply thanks to the built-in Battery Management System. Moreover, lithium batteries can be charged faster and retain their full capacity. Why Lithium?

Lithium batteries have been on the rise for a few years now. More and more fishermen and water sports enthusiasts are opting for electric boating with a lithium battery, because of the advantages that lithium can offer. They weigh less, have a longer life and are easier to use. There are more and more convenient lithium batteries that provide the energy on and around the water. Rebelcell offers innovative batteries that are suitable for trolling motors, bow engines, electric outboard engines or for other electricity on board such as the fishfinder or the depth sounder.

Lead vs Lithium

Lithium batteries have many advantages over lead batteries. Lead batteries, however, are a lot cheaper in purchase than a lithium battery. The cheapest battery option will therefore often be a lead battery. Lithium batteries are much lighter in weight, have a longer lifespan and can be deeply discharged. Lithium batteries are slightly more expensive to purchase than lead batteries, but over the entire lifespan they are often cheaper because they last longer. We explain this in more detail at the bottom of this page.

Light weight

Anyone who has ever lifted a lead battery knows how heavy lead batteries are. Rebelcell lithium batteries are often many times lighter than comparable AGM or semi-traction lead batteries. A Rebelcell 12V50 AV lithium battery weighs only 5kg while a lead battery with the same capacity (a 105Ah semi-traction) weighs more than 26kg. The sailing time with both batteries with a trolling motor is the same. This has to do with the usable battery capacity. For many people, a lightweight battery for the trolling motor or electric outboard motor makes that they can enjoy an afternoon of boating much more.

Longer life span

Lithium batteries have many more life cycles than lead batteries. This means that you can charge and discharge them more often. Lead batteries typically have 300-500 cycles. To achieve this number of cycles, you also have to handle the battery very carefully (don’t discharge is to deeply, charge immediately after use, etc.) With a lithium battery you have 1000 cycles and less can go wrong. Per boating trip Lithium can therefore be cheaper.

Battery Management System (BMS): never discharge to deep again

Lead batteries can be discharged up to 50 and 75%. Many people do not realize enough that just discharging it too deep can mean that the battery is irreparably damaged. So if you don’t pay attention while sailing, you can damage the battery. All lithium batteries that Rebelcell offers are protected against this by a built-in BMS. This allows you to continue sailing without worrying until the battery is completely empty.

Other advantages of Lithium batteries

– Fast charging. All lithium batteries can be charged with different chargers, including fast chargers. As a result, lithium batteries can often be charged way faster than lead batteries.

– Maintaining full thrust. Lithium batteries provide a higher voltage until they are almost empty than lead batteries, whereby the voltage actually decreases as they get emptier. This allows you to continuously maintain full thrust with a lithium battery.

– Less chance of damage. Lithium batteries can be deeply discharged and it is not a problem if they aren’t being used for a while. In addition, they can better withstand low or high temperatures.

– Less loss of capacity over the years: Lithium batteries retain their capacity better when they get old. Lead batteries noticeably lose capacity every year.

– They’re a lot smaller in size. They take up much less space on board and often just fit in the box in the back.

Choosing the right battery

To choose the right battery, you must first ask the question what you will use the battery for. If you only use this for a bait boat, you need the 12V07 AV or the 12V18 AV. If you use the battery for a trolling motor, bow engine or electric outboard engine, then you need a battery from the (blue) AV line for a 12 volt motor or (white) 24V battery for a 24V motor. Read more about how to find the suitable battery for a trolling motor or electric outboard engine. If you need the battery for other electrical equipment on board such as a fishfinder or depth meter, then a battery from the AV line is the best choice. Read more how to choose the right battery for your fishfinder or other electricity on board.

The price of a battery versus the price of usage

A lead battery is cheaper but lasts less than a comparable lithium battery. Suppose you take a AGM lead battery of 100Ah, it will cost you about €250,-. If you always use you battery in the right way, you can get about 400 cycles from this battery. Each time of use will therefor cost you €250/400 = 62 cents. The comparable 12V50 from Rebelcell costs €559, – and with this battery you have 1000 cycles. This will cost you €559/100 = 56 cents for every use. The initial purchase is higher, but it will cost you less per time of boating.

The Rebelcell AV line batteries:

Voltage (V) and Ampere-hour (Ah)
Batteries come in different voltages and with a varying number of ampere-hours (ah). With the Rebelcell batteries, the voltage is in the name before the V, and the number of Ah after the V. A Rebelcell 12V50 is a 12-volt battery with a capacity of 50 amperes-hours. But what does that actually say? The voltage indicates what kind of devices can run on the battery. Very simply, 12V devices should run on a 12V battery and 24V on 24V, etc. The capacity of the battery is measured in Ah. In other words, the higher the number of Ah, the longer you can use a battery before it is empty. Read more about Voltage and Amps this in this article.

Is it safe for me to replace my lead battery with a lithium battery?

Yes, this is always possible with Rebelcell batteries. Normally lithium batteries have a slightly higher voltage than lead batteries, but with Rebelcell batteries this is digitally adjusted (the AV line stands for Adjusted Voltage). Normally the higher voltage with lithium can be a problem, but with the batteries form Rebelcell you do not have to worry.

How long does it take to charge my battery?

That depends on the battery and charger. In the table below you can find which battery can be charged with which charger, and what the charging time is.
